If you’ve snagged a work-from-home job, welcome to the club! Whether this is the first time you’re working from home or you finally have the space to set up a home office, this guide will walk you through everything you need to set yourself up for work-from-home success. And while it is possible to work from your bed or at the kitchen table, having a dedicated workspace can help minimize distractions and get you in the work mindset.
Though work-from-home jobs were on the rise even before 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic really jump-started the work-from-home model. Prior to 2020, Pew Research Center reports that of those whose jobs could be done from home, just 23% of employees were working remotely. That number jumped to 71% of employed adults working from home all or most of the time in October of 2020.
As the pandemic restrictions were lifted, many wondered what that would do to the work-from-home landscape. Would there be a mass return to the office or would employers and employees continue to use the work-from-home model? As recently as January 2022, Pew Research Center found that of employed adults who say their jobs can be done from home, 59% are currently working from home all or most of the time — many by their choice.
So whether you’re new to the workforce or have switched to remote work, we’re here to help you create a sweet home office setup that has all of the home office essentials you’ll need for work-from-home success.
The space
When you’re ready to set up a work-from-home space, the first decision you’ll have to make is where you’re going to set it up. If you have a room to dedicate to home office use, start there! But you can also get creative and set up a backyard office, a designated corner of your bedroom, or a cozy corner of the living room.
Natural light
Natural light offers immense benefits including boosting your mood, increasing productivity, and reducing the likelihood of seasonal affective disorder. A 2018 Future Workplace survey found that 78% of employees attributed improved wellbeing to access to natural light and views while 70% noted improved performance. If you can find a space in your home with access to natural light, you’re off to a good start!
Proximity to distractions
If you’re working from home with kids, animals, or even a running dishwasher, you know that distractions are everywhere. Choose a home office space that is as far from noisy areas as possible. If there’s a door that you can close, even better.
Amount of space
Work-from-home jobs differ greatly. Some home offices need just a desk and laptop while others require space for file cabinets, paper shredders, and multiple monitors. Evaluate the amount of space that you need and choose a place where you can fit everything comfortably.
The basics
The base of a work-from-home setup is the desk area. Whether you need a small desk that tucks in the corner, a sit/stand desk for daily movement, or a behemoth that can support the need for a large workspace, we have you covered. And don’t worry, we didn’t forget about a place to sit.
