There are over 106,500 real estate brokerages and over 3 million real estate agents in the U.S. With so many real estate companies to pick from, it can feel overwhelming to choose the right one to ensure your move goes smoothly on both ends. To best meet your homeownership needs, the real estate company you choose should have expertise in the local market, a high number of home sales under their belt, a quick turnaround on home sales, and a track record of ethical transactions.
A real estate brokerage is only as good as the agent you choose
A brokerage is the state-licensed supporting agency behind a real estate agent. The best brokerages strive to hire, retain, and support the best agents. When you choose an agent, you select both the agent and the brokerage that they work for.
While it’s always a good idea to research the real estate companies you choose, the quality of service you receive will ultimately depend on the knowledge, characteristics, and experience of the real estate agent you work with.
A good brokerage will have agents familiar with every possible selling and buying situation. They will have agents that can address your circumstances, whether you need a fast sale, extra personal service, the highest return on your home sale, or the best possible price on a home in the neighborhood you want.
If you need more help finding the right agent, HomeLight can introduce you to a few highly qualified candidates in your area.
How we picked our top 50 real estate brokerages
To help you find a top real estate agent for your home purchase and/or sale, we’ve done some research for you. We’ve selected some of the top real estate brokerages within the U.S. based on performance, which includes the number of deals successfully closed, their average time on the market, and high client reviews.
This list will give you a better idea of which brokerages you might want to consider, or what similar qualities you can look for in a real estate group or agent in your area.
While this is by no means an exhaustive list, these companies constantly provide exemplary service to homebuyers and sellers. We’ve researched their track record on successful sales transactions and studied their customer reviews.
For regional brokerages, we’ve provided average ratings from Google, Facebook, Yelp, and Zillow reviews. Multi-state and national brokerages may not have consolidated ratings or reviews across review sites and real estate channels. For these larger brokerages, be sure to check out the ratings for the regional office when making your selection.
These companies have built their reputations on results. They employ full-service, experienced agents that are respected in the industry and within the communities they serve. These brokerages and their agents typically sell homes above market value or helped their clients purchase homes below market value. They are real estate champions for the buyers and sellers who trust them with what is often the largest financial transaction in their lifetimes.
Disclaimer: Details about individual real estate brokerages can frequently change. For the most up to date details for each company, please refer to the company’s website.

4 listing companies for sellers who prefer to go FSBO
Our list would not be balanced without including a few real estate companies that help sellers who want to try their hand at selling “for sale by owner” or FSBO.
Selling your home yourself is not a popular strategy. According to the National Association of Realtors, only 7% of home sales were FSBO in recent years. But there is a growing list of companies who are offering services to help home sellers looking to save money by reducing or eliminating real estate commissions and broker fees.
When considering saving money, however, it’s important to keep in mind that FSBO homes typically sell for less than the selling price of other homes. Last year, FSBO homes sold at a median of $260,000 which is significantly lower than the median of agent-assisted homes at $318,000.
And if selling on the open market, the workload for a home seller can be immense; the majority of successful FSBO sellers, 57%, knew the buyer of the home.
For those who have the time and desire, these companies and others provide services designed to make the FSBO journey easier and more profitable.
